Watch Thomas on CNN

In a recent appearance on CNN, Thomas Clardy opened up about the recent court developments in his case. After being released from prison in 2023 after 17 years for a crime he did not commit, Thomas runs the risk of his conviction being reinstated.

The original conviction was overturned by a US District Court, with the judge citing "exceedingly weak evidence." [00:27] However, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals reversed this decision, and the Supreme Court declined to hear his appeal. Now, the state of Tennessee is seeking his return to prison.

"It's shocking and disappointing," Thomas said of the reversal. [01:03] He maintains his innocence and remains hopeful for justice.

Jessica Van Dyke, legal director of the Tennessee Innocence Project, explained that the decision to reinstate the conviction was based on a legal argument, not new evidence. Van Dyke notes the rarity of this situation, and very few similar cases across the country.

The Tennessee Innocence Project has filed for clemency with Governor Lee’s office and continues to highlight Thomas's positive contributions to the community since his release.

In his two years of freedom, Thomas has been dedicated to building strong relationships, mentoring others including at-risk populations, and proving his character. [04:48]

The date for a potential return to prison remains unclear.
